Guest Speaker: Dr. Joan Lipa
Dr. Lipa is a Plastic Surgeon at University Health Network, specializing in reconstruction following cancer surgery, with a particular interest in breast reconstruction. For tissue reconstruction, she uses perforator flaps to minimize donor site morbidity.
She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Medical School. She did a straight surgical internship at the University of Toronto before entering the Plastic Surgery Residency Program. Joan completed a Masters of Science degree in flap physiology within the Surgeon Scientist Program and during this time won several prestigious awards including the Snyder Award of the Plastic Surgery Research Council. Following her residency, she spent a year as a clinical fellow at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and is a Diplomate of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Inc. She is on staff at University Health Network in the Division of Plastic Surgery and Department of Surgical Oncology and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. She continues to be actively involved in teaching Plastic Surgeons both within residency training programs and through continuing medical education conferences locally and internationally.
